Measures have been taken by the Immigration Services Agency as of April 30th 2020, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infections (COVID-19) by implementing restrictions on visits to the immigration counters to reduce congestion. Due to these restrictions, the application period has been extended as outlined below.
1) Foreign nationals with visa expiration dates in May and June are given a grace period of 3 months from the date of expiration to change status of residence, renewal of period of stay, etc.
2) The period for receipt of the results (issuance of a residence card, etc.)for foreign nationals who have residence cards and have already applied for change of residential status or extension of the period of stay have also been extended for three more months.
3)The Immigration Services Agency of Japan is restricting entry into its premises to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infections. You might have to wait awhile outside until you are allowed to enter. It is highly advisable to use Legal Professional Corporation IMS, who are under contract with the University of Tokyo to provide visa consultation services, to handle your application for visa extension.
